Question: I am considering purchasing a Sundeer 60 on the east coast (I am from Seattle), and was wondering if you could please comment on the sailing characteristic (my Seattle Broker says there is some issue with the boat’s motions but I am not sure he has good information). Was this a concern when you purchased Slingshot ?

PS. Years ago when my kids were “of the age” I flew down to Ft Lauderdale to see Avalon …. she had a bid areo rig at the time…. nice to you are doing what I wanted to with my kids…
Hi Brian,
Thanks for reaching out. We are really happy with the motion of the boat – not an issue for us at all and not something we were worried about when purchasing. It is the most comfortable sailboat we’ve had to date (this is our fifth boat). The waterline and water ballast, somewhat wide submerged transom and soft turn of the bilge for the initial 5 degrees of heel all contribute to a comfortable motion whether at anchor or at sea. Interesting you saw Slingshot when she was Avalon. The rig is set up more traditionally now and we are very happy with it. Happy to answer any more questions you may have!

Hi – Terrific to hear that you are enjoying cruising with your kids. Saw your article in Seabreeze. We thought you might like to hear from us. We are RVYC members who got back from ten years cruising offshore just over a year ago. We spent two years in the Pacific before selling our boat in Fiji. We kept a blog while we were away, maybe our time in the Pacific might be of help to you. Check out sailblogs.com/member/poulston. If you have ANY questions do not hesitate to contact us.
Another thought after reading your plans. If possible do not miss the Galapagos. This was a highlight for us. A very special place and difficult to visit if not on a boat. The cost for a multi island visa was well worth it; especially as we had family come and visit. Your plan for a longer visa for FP is great as we had a tough time leaving the “Tomatoes”; especially if you are divers or keen snorkelers. A unknown gem.
Thank you for your thoughts! We have been talking about the Galapagos and trying to decide what to do. For now we’ve landed on going to the Revillagigedo islands as a compromise though will not compare with Galapagos I’m sure, though after reading your views it’s pushing me back into the Galapagos camp! We are hoping to get the longstay visa – hoping to get there before Brexit at the end of March and see what happens with Gavin’s EU status…
Gavin and Family,
Great to see you are enjoying the offshore cruising life so much…it makes all the hard work worthwhile. Seeing all your pictures brings back such great memories of our time down there, thanks. Teaser..the Sea of Cortez is just the tip of the iceberg of spectacular cruising destinations!! Fair winds on your crossing!

Are you getting ready for the big crossing? that is amazing! how are the kiddos? how is home schooling (or boat schooling) going? Hope you are all well and can’t wait to see you when you are back (although it sounds like that will be a while….) all the best, KK….
Hi KK! I have been thinking about you and family! So great to hear from you. Yes we are loving Mex, busy with home schooling and provisioning and projects. Everyone is good. How are you all? Hope you are well and we are excited to see you all too! Say Hi to Brett and G and A for us. Nate is missing hockey and soccer. But he is liking new sports like surfing so that is good. Take care and miss you!

Love the photos of Yelapa. It has fond memories for us. When Charley was five months old we rented the little yellow house on the cliff by the small beach for a stint. We did the falls hike many times with Charley in a back pack (the locals loved the back pack). I fondly remember the banana pancakes at the little cafe on the water’s edge. Thanks for reviving some great memories. Glad you enjoyed it there.
Hi Laurie – So cool that you spent time there with little Charley. I think we saw the yellow house! Yes we loved the falls hike! I wanted to spend a bit more time in Yelapa but the anchorage was rolly with swell coming in. I would have liked to check into the little yellow house for a night 😉 Take care!
